Another busy weekend, I just don't know where the time is going. Hubby loved his bricklaying course and is itching to practice. The wash-house and a large tree (real shame) will have to come down first though.
Didn't sleep at all on Saturday night because hubby was nightshift and when I went through to bed I noticed lots of mice droppings right by my bed. Too late to phone my sister and disturb both our kids, I grabbed a quilt, shut the door (like that would stop them!!) and spent the night on the sofa, with the TV on. I tried putting it off, but the house makes so many noises at night, I was almost out of my mind. Sunday morning saw me bleary eyed and feeling like an idiot because on further inspection it wasn't droppings, but just little black pieces of rubber that had collected in hubbies trainers when he was playing football on an astro turf pitch. Thank goodness I have a doctors appointment because things are getting ridiculous.
Despite lack of sleep, I had a bit of baking(mars bar cake etc) to do for my nan's birthday. Hubby made soda bread and I dipped loads of strawberries in belgian chocolate and nestled them in little foil cases- they were really easy and looked great. She was 95 years young and looking fabulous, if a little fed up. Her eyesight is gone except for light and shade and her hearing isn't great although definitely selective. As well as loads of cards and enough flowers to stock a florist ( or a funeral parlour as her younger(age 92) sister pointed out) she got wonderful presents and vouchers towards her holiday clothes. She has her usual two weeks in Ireland booked and refuses to go with the same clothes she had last year (people have seen them!). This includes shoes and handbags. Still at 95, she can have what she likes.
Was working this morning and will be tomorrow as well and then thats me until Saturday. I have a new "to do" list and am hoping for the same success as my last one. I'll keep you all posted. Hopefully the weather will pick up (Scotland has been very overcast with some rain today) and I can get out and about as well.
Take care and enjoy your day/evening - Jacqui x

WHERE DID THE WEEK GO?
Hi all, hope you are all bumping along nicely! I can't believe its a full week since I was last logged on, I must have lost a few days somewhere. Where to begin?
Firstly, an apology to you all for having a right old moan in my last blog. I was just right out of sorts for no particular reason and so had a rant about everything and anything. In the grand scheme of things I know that I am luckier than lots of people in this world but it still doesn't stop me wanting to scream sometimes. Last week, my scream was more of a manic clearing of clutter and anything else that got in my way. I emptied four cupboards, two baskets and completely cleared a mountain of ironing all in the one day. Goodness knows what went in the bin/to charity, its all a bit of a blur. Hubby stayed well out of the way!
My creative spurt, definitely calmed things and got my positive thoughts back on track. For once, I crossed off all but two things on my list , which was amazing and very satisfying. One of the good things about my clear out was finding all the lovely art stuff I had bought but never got around to using. I came across a cream material panel with a cut out celtic design which I bought in Ikea about a year ago because I liked it but didn't really have a use for it (when has that ever mattered?). Its supposed to be a room divider that you hang on special metal rails that you attach to the ceiling but living in a small cottage I was never going to do that. As my walls are a sort of clotted cream colour, I painted a duck egg blue horizontal panel above my sofa and attached the hanging over it so that the colour shines through the cutwork design. I finished of the edges with some lovely wool in blue and green hues. The wool is chunky and flat, almost like felted ribbon (another thing I found at the bottom of my knitting basket) and I am delighted with the overall result. We did have to laugh though because despite having been so precise with the spirit level to get the panel straight, if you see it reflected in the mirror opposite it looks decidedly lopsided. The panel is fine, its my house thats wonky.
Early hours of Saturday morning had me beating hubby around the head to wake him up. To cut a very long story short, there was a mouse in our bedroom. I have an extreme phobia of the creatures (traumatic incident in childhood) and my reaction was probably as extreme as its ever been ( shaking, heart pounding, uncontrollable crying (my best friends have never seen me cry!) and this time vomitting and upset stomach as well. When the worst passed (hubby caught it in under 15 mins) I was left with a pounding sore head which lasted until Monday. There have only been 5 incidents in the last 22 years but as I don't seem to be getting over it, I have booked an appointment to see my doctor because I really need to get help.
Saturday night had the house full of friends for Hubby's celebration party (passing his qualifying exams). They weren't to know we had been up all night! Actually, the cooking and baking during the day helped me focus rather than worry and it turned into quite a good bash. As the hostess, I was brought lovely deep pink roses and also a big bunch of lilac stock intermingled with tiny baby pink roses. My lovely sister brought hand made soap (another of my favourite things) and my other friend supplied a chocolate cake in the guise of a champagne bottle.
Work still isn't great but the money and hours gives me the freedom to do other things and be there for my kids, so I'm settling at the minute (I will move on at some point, honest!).
Have unearthed lots of different peg rails and coat hooks which I am putting up today (were the things left over from last weeks list). I'm excited about this because I have lovely things (bags, fabric hearts, lavender etc) to hang from them.
Hubby is away on a bricklaying course today and tomorrow, with a view to recycling the bricks from my wash house (being demolished for the extension) to make raised beds for his spuds and any other veg we might venture to grow at a later date.
Well, my scented candle is lit and the kettle is just boiled, so I'm going to have some tea (possibly with a chocolate biscuit) and catch up with you all.
Take care, have a lovely day/afternoon/evening - Jacqui x

A SIMPLY LOVELY DAY!
I haven't had a chance to blog at all this week, not even a quick dip in , just to catch up on what you are all doing. Family life has eaten up the time as usual and work isn't great at the moment, so I've been feeling a bit sorry for myself. Out of sorts about nothing in particular, if you know what I mean. I had a rant at hubby and the kids about being everyones slave, taken for granted, them not realising that I am a person in my own right (God I sound deranged!!). When asked what he likes most about me, my son smiled and replied "you make good puddings mummy". It seems I have my epitaph, when the time comes.
Anyway, enough of the glums. Yesterday, I decided that I needed to start doing things I enjoy and just for me. I've made a list and posted it on the fridge and this morning I made a start.
Being Wednesday, I had two year old Aoife. We had a splendid time making a tent in the living room. A large throw, pegged over two kitchen chairs, with floor cushions underneath and we were all set. She liked it so much, she watched "bed knobs and broomsticks" from inside.
After dinner, I spent an hour or so painting my terracotta plant pots (ready to be potted up tomorrow, weather permitting). I also painted the frame of my new extra large pinboard, much mocked by Hubby because of the size but I don't care. The existing one is always crammed with things and my photos and postcards and cuttings disappear under school holiday lists and dentist cards. The new one is going to be vibrant and creative and fabulous. I also bought two for the kids room, one of which I have given a coat of magnetic paint. The second coat will go on tomorrow and I've got some snazzy magnets to finish it off. I've been saving tin cans, all sizes and have removed the labels and am using them to pot my herbs for the windowsill. I also have two peg rails and several clothes hooks ( lovely ones in the shape of cupcakes) to put up. My next big thing will be to strip my pine coffee table. I'm going to paint it off white and distress it (such a funny expression). If it turns out okay, I have several chairs and a tv cabinet as well.
Just getting started has cheered me up and I'm determined to get through my list, no matter how long it takes. Tomorrow will busy day, but I can't wait to get it started.
I'm just going to make a cuppa and then read a few blogs because my head is so full ideas and thoughts that theres no way I could sleep just now.
I hope that anyone reading this is happy and well.
Take care, Jacqui x

A BUSY FEW DAYS!
It is official, the laundry in my house is most definitely multiplying. Last week I had a good old moan at everyone about picking up their dirties and putting them in the washing basket (something which normally falls on deaf ears). Unlike the rest of the UK, Scotland has had quite good weather and so I have managed to get lots of washing done, including everything unearthed by my surprisingly obedient children. As we speak it is stacked in piles around me, and being the slight control freak that I am, I cannot put it away until its done (sad, I know, but true ). I sort of added to the problem by getting the summer clothes down from the top of the wardrobe and giving them a rinse. Needless to say, I haven't quiet managed to put the winter ones away yet and so we are bursting at the seams (nothing that a good jumble sale wouldn't cure according to my hubby).
Yesterday was spent baking for my nephews' eighth birthday, marshmallow top hats, marsbar cake, mini crispie cakes and fudge topped cup cakes with assorted smartie, choc button, and sprinkle decorations. They looked fab all piled into my three tier pink cake stand (even if I do say so myself) and all those e-numbers served to keep the kids bouncy for a good five hours. I should say that my sister hired a bouncy castle and it wasn't simply the kids going mad.
Has two year old Aoife today, so we spent the morning singing and dancing and re-reading the same story book a million times. Hubby was here as well, so she was perfectly happy snuggled up with him on the sofa (his excuse for an afternoon nap). House looks like a bombsite, but I don't really care.
Got word from the council that our building warrant has been granted today and so officially all systems are go!(only two years after we started). This afternoon we ordered a special loft ladder as we are getting the hatch widened so that we can store our junk (I mean essentials) in the existing loft space which will be unaffected by the building work. Our renewed excitement had us spreading out the plans to get a look at what will eventually (have given up on all timescales) be our lovely home (fingers crossed, lots of praying). Not being great with measurements, hubby looked quite worried at some of the questions I was asking and if I'm honest theres a few things on the plans that I apparently requested but have no memory of. Just lets say I'm keeping my mouth closed and hoping for the best.
Hubby is looking to have all our friends over on Saturday night to celebrate him passing his qualifying exams and as much as I like seeing them it will mean me doing a mad clear up/cooking frenzy when I come in from work at one. Although I know he will help, all I really want to do on a Saturday evening is watch "Any Dream Will Do" with my kids and fall asleep on the couch. I must be getting old before my time, but I'll keep you all posted as to what we end up doing.
Its poured down all day here so I didn't quite get my hanging baskets potted up. The one lovely thing about the rain is the smell of the grass and the hedges and how everythings looks clean and shiny. Hubby's not amused because he has only just cut the grass (or daisy killing as I used to call it as a child) and he swears he can see it growing in front of his very eyes.
Hope you all have a lovely evening/morning, I'm off to catch up with everyone elses goings on.

GOODBYE JOANIE!
My aunt died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. When I say aunt, she was actually my mum's cousin. Her name was Joan or Joanie to her friends and family and she lived in Co Tipperary in Southern Ireland.
As a child, I spent all my summer holidays in Co Sligo with Joanies sister, (aunty Mary to me). Despite the fact that aunty mary had seven children of her own, she would acquire at least another half a dozen from her siblings and cousins who were situated throughout Ireland and Scotland. Having only a small cottage, bedtime involved lots of head to toe sleeping with an average of three to a bed. Aunty Mary had no heating and only one tap in the scullery (Kitchen) and so hot water had to be boiled in a massive pot on the range and then carried through to the sink. The same range was the permanent home to a massive pressure cooker full of potatoes, which would physically shake and hiss to the point where you thought it must surely explode. Nowadays Health and Safety would have a field day, but I thought it was all magical.
Having only one younger sister at home and being the eldest grandchild I was always very much in the spotlight, whereas in Ireland I had the freedom to disappear among all the other children and just enjoy myself. Those summers were the best thing about my childhood and when aunty Mary died a few years ago it was a terrible blow to me. At 72 I felt she was far too young, afterall I still had my nan (95 in June) and her younger sister (93) so this seemed to me like a life cut short. I still miss her very much, even to this day.
Joanie was a larger than life character who had five children of her own and who nursed a sick wheelchair bound husband until he died. Once he had gone, she picked herself up and got on with her life. She was a devil for a practical joke and was always up to mischief. Her last few months saw her confined to a hospice in Limerick about 100 miles round trip from her family and so she was brought home to die. A frail shadow of herself, she slipped away quietly with all her family around her. That was when the phonecall came.
Joanie is gone! She will be buried tomorrow and everything is in place. At a days notice I couldn't get there but did send flowers only to find that the funeral had been put back a day and if I'd known I might have made it there in time.
If you are looking down Joanie, I hope that you know how much that you'll be missed and that you are sharing some joke or story with Aunty Mary. I'll be thinking of you both and will light a candle at mass tomorrow.
Goodnight and God Bless

BINGO AND BUNS
Hello to you all! The past week has been really hectic, hence, no time to read any blogs never mind throw together one of my own.
After the beautiful sunny weekend of my sons' communion day(some are still recovering from over exhersion on the bouncy castle) we've had a bit of a mixed bag on the old weather front (what's new for Scotland!). On Sunday I got absolutely drenched during my mad dash from the church to my front door (only two doors down and the reason why I didn't bother with a brolly or rain jacket). The kids thought it was great fun until they realised it was cold as well and began to shiver. Obviously, we couldnt go back out, so we spent the day slobbing on the sofa with a DVD (treasure planet and the ware rabbit).
It was my dads 60th birthday on Monday, so we were there in force with obligatory hellium ballons, pressies, chocolate (which he always dismisses as not wanting it, but then squirrels it away without so much as offering you a square) cake, candles etc etc. A word of warning on the candles front, we bought fancy gold coloured ones which looked the part but, if he had been any longer in blowing them out they would have been completely melted away. He had already been out for a birthday lunch the previous day and was itching to get to watch the snooker final (local guy - John Higgins won) so we were forced to cut the party short. A little selfish on his part I thought, but then my dad never was the most considerate of men.
Tuesday was an inservice day (YES ANOTHER ONE!) so the kids were at home with hubby while I went to work. I returned at 2.00pm to find them on the playstation (who needs clean clothes, dishes, hoovered carpets when crazy frog can be raced). Wonderful as my hubby is, he doesn't really multi-task. He will tell you that he either plays with the kids or does the house work, not both. It has the effect of making you feel guilty for not playing with the kids because obviously that is the most important thing. Why do dads always get to play "good cop" to mums, get washed, brush your teeth, etc etc "bad cop" or is this just in my house.
Before I forget, hubby has passed his qualifying exam in full and will receive his new salary from the end of the month. I am very proud of him as he has worked very hard for the past three years and deserves the recognition.
Last night, we the PTA, have finally held an activity which the parents and parish will support. PRIZE BINGO! Such was the frenzy of walking sticks and white permed heads for the best seats, that we were half an hour late starting because we hadn't put out enough tables and had to carry them down from the upstairs classrooms because the lower classes only have the tiny ones and we couldn't risk getting any of the OAPs stuck. We got loads of home baking handed in for the interval and for the first time ever WE HAD A QUEUE waiting to get in. This is truly unheard of. At the end of the evening we were congratulated on the fabulous prizes, the spread we had put on and the cost to get in (apparently cheaper than the church hall, so hopefully no noses have been put out of joint). Even better we have raised around £600 which is a great deal for our school and is a great boost to our target. We are aiming to pay for every child to go on the end of term trip for free (normally about £10 each). Pity we didn't know earlier that bingo is
is so popular.
This morning I am feeling a little pleased with myself and am off to lunch with my lovely hubby before the kids get home from school.
Take care, Jacqui x

A good old catch up!
A good old catch up!
I've had a fab time catching up with everyones blogs and am delighted that lots of us are here.I had another great day today. Being Wednesday, my niece was here today and we had a great time hanging the washing and watering the flowers (two year olds are so easily pleased).Hubby was three hours late home from nightshift (I kept a watch on the time) because they had to evacuate an old folks home after a fire during the night. I knew deep down that he was okay, but the nature of the job does make you say a silent prayer that everythings okay. Thankfully, all the residents were okay as well.
I had a quiet hour to myself, just pottering in the garden while the two year old napped on one sofa and hubby napped on the other. Both were sound to the world, so sound in fact that the little one wet through my newly washed sofa covers (well they did last a whole week). At least with the good weather I got them straight in the machine and out on the line. She was so matter of fact about it and announced that "its okay, its only pee!". Normally, she has lots of spare clothes with her but today there was no clean top so she got to pick one of my daughters. She choose a very fetching pussy cat with a diamonte collar and tiara or ta ra ra as she calls it. As my daughter is ten, the t-shirt served as a full length dress which she refused to take off even when her own clothes were dry.
This afternoon I did the ballet drop off/pick up for daughter and a quick trip to Matalan for some shorts for son. Jeans are no good for a water fight and I now remember that I put most of last years summer stuff in the charity bag (it seemed like a good idea at the time).Hubby made the dinner and the kids played outside until later than usual because there is no school tomorrow owing to the elections. Hopefully they might sleep past seven am tomorrow!
I'm ashamed to say that I have been blogging and telly watching all evening (well, we have another three large easter eggs to get through). It does seem like the waste of a whole night but you know what, I don't care.As we speak, Hubby is inspecting his eyelids for damage and I am going to have a quick cuppa before I turn in (can't promise I won't read a few more blogs before I go).I hope that all you lovely people had a pleasant day and that tomorrow brings another just as nice.
Take care - Jacqui x
